*Note: The following chart portrays the actual rates of the United States Marine Corps, from which I protracted the SFMC rates. The reason why they are adapted is because as you can see,
for the rates of E-8 and E-9, there are multiple rates listed. And there are also duplicated Naval ranks on the Equivalency column. This seems very confusing, and it confused me as well, until I applied a little
logic to it.
The United States Marine Corps rates are almost identical to the US Army's rates. They each have twelve distinct rankings, or eleven and the special rate Sergeant Major of the US Army/Marine Corps.
But the problem is, the United States Navy uses only 9 rates, and since the Marine Corps falls directly under the Naval Branch, the Marines have had to adapt their rates to fit. This is all simply a postulation of course, as I dont have any
on hand knowledge of the Marine Corps *L* But it seems sensible. And remember, Enlisted Rates are intended to denote payscale, not rank. The United States employs a similar system in Federal Jobs, based on experience and education. So according to the chart directly below, a Sergeant Major might outrank a Master Gunnery Sergent, but he does not "Out-Rate" him, and still gets paid the same.
So to sum things up, I adapted the Starfleet Marine ranks to avoid confusion. I threw out the ranks Master Gunnery Sergeant and First Sergeant, and changed the Sergeant Major of the Starfleet Marine Corps to an E-10 rating (even though we dont know if Starfleet personnel actually GET paid *LOL*) to avoid confusion. These are not the official Enlisted Rates for all Starfleet Marine Corps Enlisted men, but I'd like to think they could be.
